It is not necessary for the acid rain to be in wet form, it may occur in the snow, fog and other forms. Acid rains not only affect living beings, but it is also harmful to aquatic animals and plants. Furthermore, acid rain has an adverse impact on forests, killing freshwaters and soils, corrosion of steel in bridges etc.
Acid rains are usually caused due to air pollution. We all are aware of how air pollution has been the major reason for the destruction of the environment. The harmful chemicals present in the air that leads to acid rain are nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. When these chemicals react with water, oxygen and other oxidants a mild solution of nitrogen acid and sulfuric acid is formed. Resulting in the formation of acid rains.
With the help of new and innovative technologies, the damages caused due to acid rains can be reduced to a reasonable extent.
• Reduce the use of pollutants in power plants - Power plants generate the electricity we use every day. But power plants are the main reason for the acid rains. Power plants produce large amounts of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide which are the pollutants that cause acid rains. Limiting the use of sulfur dioxide reduces the number of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide emissions. Scientists have designed a new equipment called Scrubbers that can remove the sulfur dioxide from gases.
• Reduce the use of fossil fuels – Most of the electricity is obtained from burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil. The harmful pollutants – sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide released from these fossil fuels is also a reason for acid pollution. Therefore, using alternative energy sources like nuclear energy, hydropower, solar energy, natural gas etc. will reduce the acid rain.
• Reduce the use of vehicles – Gases released by the vehicles has its crucial role in causing acid rain. One better solution for this is to use a carpool or public transport. Also, purchasing cars that incorporates catalytic converter technology helps in reducing acid rains.
Acid rain is a global problem and it can be eradicated by implementing the latest technologies as well as making small changes in our daily activities like turning off lights and other electric appliances when not needed.
